The German cockroach is by far the most common roach species found worldwideMarked by two black stripes just below their head, German cockroaches are light to dark brown and has a tapered abdomen. German cockroaches are hitchhikers; they notoriously spread via luggage, delivery trucks, or food/beverage crates, feeding on a wide variety of food sources.

As a result of both their diet and travel preferences, they most often hide out in kitchens or places where food sources are abundant. Their worldwide distribution can create a huge problem for people. The German cockroach is the species that give all roach species, such as the Asian cockroach, a bad reputation! In fact, their waste can cause severe allergic responses; in severe cases, they have bitten humans and consume food residue on bodies while sleeping.

German cockroaches prefer to reside in warm, humid places close to both food and moisture sources. They are frequently found in residential/commercial kitchens and bathrooms. It is also very likely to find German cockroach dropping in the areas they frequent. Droppings usually appear as dark, small, pepper-like markings found on countertops or inside drawers. There may also be ‘fecal staining’, which are smears or spots along the tops of doors, in the corners of rooms, or around cracks/openings into walls. When large populations are present, it may be possible to detect a mild, somewhat “musty” odor. German cockroaches can become a huge problem because they reproduce rapidly— they can have up to 6 generations per year! These roaches are nocturnal and move swiftly and silently,  so they can go unnoticed until they are a real problem.

Treatment

Sanitation, along with professional pesticide treatment, are the best methods for eradication. Still, as a result of their rapid reproduction cycle, it is common to require more than one treatment to eliminate. At Hogarth’s Pest Control & Wildlife Removal, we specialize in German cockroach removal and are eager to assist you in eliminating them from your home. Call us today!
