For many homeowners, one of the more appealing things about the winter season is the lack of insects. While most of the mosquitoes, ticks, and flies have disappeared, springtails are lone pest that can be found hopping about on a layer of freshly fallen snow. Springtails, otherwise known as snow fleas, are small insects that utilize a special protein in their body that allows them to withstand the harsh winter temperatures.

These tiny critters are not fleas but get their unique nickname from their ability to jump from place to place, an action visually similar to that of fleas. This jumping action is more noticeable in the winter when springtails’ dark bodies stand out against the snow. They are a nuisance pest that can stain painted surfaces when squashed. True to their name, these insects really can jump! Their movement patterns are similar to fleas, which is where they get their nickname.

Springtails usually get out of control when there is a high moisture content around the home. For example, when trees are not cut back, and the house does not get much sunlight throughout the day, or the vegetation surrounding the home has built up over the years. When the population increases, they will move towards bathrooms, laundry rooms, or kitchens, wherever moisture can be found.

Tips for springtail elimination:

  • Clean up vegetation (cut 18 inches away from home)
  • Cut back trees around home

We tend to find springtails around homes with rocks or pebbles next to the foundation. Hogarth’s can effectively and efficiently eradicate this nuisance pest from your home with a barrier treatment that we guarantee until the snow flies in the fall.
