A phorid fly is small and looks very similar to drain and fruit flies. However, these flies have a couple of characteristics that distinguish them from others. Phorid flies are nicknamed the  ‘hump-backed flies, ‘; which is an easy indicator to the naked eye. Another trait that distinguishes phorid flies is that they choose to run away rather than flying away, like other types of flies. They quite literally run their feet versus using their wings to fly away; this also gives them the nickname the ‘scuttle’ fly.

We associate phorid flies most commonly with filth and lack of sanitation. You will find phorid flies in dirty kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms, commercial facilities, and restaurants. Phorid flies breed in drains, cracks in the grout, dirty mop buckets, old mops, under stoves, bars, and in any spilled sticky substance. Like drain flies, phorid flies do not require chemical treatment.

Phorid fly larvae live in and eat decaying organic matter. They often hang around contaminated soil adjacent to broken sewer lines.  A diaper pail full of soiled diapers is another example of a suitable secondary food source. Contacting a plumber that is capable of identifying cracks or breaks in sewage pipes running beneath the slab is an excellent beginning to eliminating an issue.  Often, phorid flies will breed in the contaminated soil and find their way into the living space through cracks, expansion joints, or bath trap openings in the slab.  If you discover a broken pipe, reparations should be made immediately, and the contaminated soil should be removed and backfilled before replacing the slab.

Increasing proper sanitation in breeding areas is the key to successfully eradicating a phorid fly issue. Hogarth’s can also provide facilities with top-grade cleaning agents. If you believe in having a phorid fly issue, please do not hesitate to call!
